Why organizations watermark by recipient
A generic "Confidential" stamp changes nothing about sharing — everyone's copy looks the same, so no copy is anyone's responsibility. A recipient watermark changes the economics: when the page shows the reader's own identity, forwarding it means signing the leak. Most unauthorized sharing is casual, and casual sharing stops when it's attributable.
How MyPass DRM implements it
- Per-reader, at view time. The watermark is applied when an authorized recipient opens the document in the controlled viewer, reflecting that reader's identity — not baked identically into every distributed file.
- Part of a policy, not a decoration. Watermarking works alongside expiration and revocation, device authorization, and print and copy controls — one policy attached to the document.
- Paired with access records. Every open is recorded, so a surfaced document plus its watermark plus the access log turns "someone leaked it" into a short investigation.

What watermarking honestly does — and doesn't
A watermark deters and identifies; it doesn't make copying physically impossible, and no vendor's does. Someone can still photograph a screen — and the photograph carries their name. The value is accountability and controlled access working together, not a promise that copying is impossible.
